Over 40 percent of Japanese companies the government recognizes as possessing confidential technology linked to security are shifting their manufacturing stations and parts supplies sources from China with an urgency to expand their supply chains, a Kyodo News survey found Tuesday.

This move is to reduce their reliance on Beijing and avoid security risks. This thought arises due to rising U.S.-China competition over technological supremacy and concerns about potential concentration of medical production in China. All levies are to relieve lack of medical supplies shoved by the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Forty-four percent, or 42 companies, of 96 respondents said they…

Much of Japan rang in 2021 in a low profile at home. This was after Tokyo reported all-time high 1,337 coronavirus infections among the 4,519 daily caseloads nationwide.

Thousands of people descended at the popular scramble crossing in Tokyo’s Shibuya district, but nowhere near to the numbers displayed in previous years. …

A month long state of emergency planned by the Japanese government to restrict a comeback of COVID-19 infections is expected to downsize the economy off trillions of yen of private consumption. Some economists have gone further to predict that the economy will return to contraction.

Envisaged economic impacts of a state of emergency in Tokyo and three neighbouring prefectures, which the government of Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga is considering pulling off on Thursday, will in all likelihood be smaller than those seen after the first emergency declaration in April last year in Tokyo and six prefectures.

The declaration then encompassed…
